History

1970s: The road to opening day

Our parent company of that time launched its own concept for resort development.

In the 1970s, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (now Yamaha Corporation) diversified its leisure operations, stepping into the world of resort development. With the return of the main island of Okinawa to Japan, Yamaha foresaw a boom in domestic tourism and decides to develop the Yaeyama Islands.

The concept of a "branch-family village" with roots in the cultural topography of Kohamajima

We knew that when it built a resort, it would bring in many more tourists than there were residents of the island, so it sought to develop the site with sensitivity to the island's scenery and way of life. We hit on the concept of a "branch-family village": We adopted a low-rise building style that preserved the traditional tile roofs of Okinawa.

The birth of Haimurubushi, Japan's first true island resort

After its opening in 1979, Haimurubushi blazed a trail as a pioneer, a true island resort in Japan. The name “Haimurubushi” means “southern constellation” in the Yaeyama dialect.

As a resort where guests can experience the sprawling natural beauty of coral reefs below and a star-filled sky above, Haimurubushi became a magnet for honeymooners and family travelers alike.

On the stage of Churasan

Kohama Island was the main setting for the NHK morning drama series Churasan, which aired in 2001, and Haimurubushi was used as the filming base. The success of this drama raised awareness of Kohama Island and "Haimurubushi" nationwide, sparking a major tourism boom.

From 2011 onward, guided by the concept of nuchigusui (a term in the local dialect meaning “medicine for life”), the Hotel focused on enhancing the experience it offers as a resort that heals both mind and body. Haimurubushi established new beach facilities and opened a branch of the Nawa Insect Museum, expanding opportunities for guests to enjoy contact with nature.
